About Texas Sterling Construction Company

History

Sterling Construction Company was founded in 1955 in Sterling Heights, Michigan. As an underground infrastructure company, Sterling steadily gained market share over the next two decades, growing to become one of Michigan’s most experienced, reliable, and well-known contractors. That success continued until the early 1980’s when Sterling faced the harsh impacts of a significantly diminished building market in Michigan. Determined and opportunistic, Sterling’s leadership relocated the company to a more active construction market in Houston, Texas and became Texas Sterling Construction Co. (TSC).

It wasn’t long after TSC settled in the great state of Texas that the company began to experience success once again. By delivering high-quality projects and gaining repeat business, TSC was rapidly increasing market share. In 1990, TSC made the decision to expand their civil services by adding a paving division to its operations. This allowed the company to self-perform a full spectrum of civil concrete projects. By the end of the decade, TSC was being awarded large highway paving and bridge projects for the Texas Department of Transportation. The unwavering determination and commitment to building and delivering quality projects on schedule and below budget earned TSC a reputation as a premier contractor in the Houston area. In 1996, the company expanded to the Dallas market and in 2002, set up an office in San Antonio. Capitalizing on continued growth and success, TSC became listed as a publicly traded company on the American Stock Exchange in 2004, under the name Sterling Construction Company Inc.

Today, TSC operates throughout Texas constructing some of the state’s most notable and important projects which include roadway construction, underground infrastructure, bridges and other civil projects for federal, state, local and private clients utilizing both traditional and alternative delivery contract models.

TSC now operates as a subsidiary of Sterling Infrastructure, Inc. (Sterling), which serves as its parent company. As Sterling strives to enrich the current and future client experience, the company is moving towards a customer and industry-focused approach. This has led to the acquisition of several companies across the western region of the United States including J. Banicki Construction, Inc.; Ralph L. Wadsworth Construction Company, LLC; Road and Highway Builders, LLC; Myers & Sons Construction, LP; Tealstone; and RDI Drilling.

These strategic acquisitions have created diverse market segment expansions to our local areas. Through company-wide technical expertise, Sterling’s local offices can provide competitive pricing, established relationships with subcontractors and suppliers, and familiarity with regulatory agencies and requirements to successfully deliver projects in these additional market segments.
